Tips for Trapping: ALWAYS ensure you have permission to trap if you're not on your own property. Merced TNR is not liable for any activities and by signing this contract you are acknowledging you have permission to trap and sterilize cats by owner/property owner/management.

Set the trap the night before transport. Place cardboard, newspaper, or a paper bag on the bottom of the trap.  Use the smallest amount of high value food (sardines, tuna, wet cat food). Push the food bowl all the way to the end. Put the trap away from busy areas, bright lights, and make the trap like a den. Look for areas near bushes or under something (ex: steps, porch). Do not leave unattended for long periods of time (keep an eye from a distance).

Once the cat is in the trap, place it in a safe & quiet place, out of the elements, with a towel or sheet draped over the trap. DO NOT try and pick a cat up to get them in a trap or pet them through the wires.

For stubborn cats, you can try trap training a few days before transport days. You'll set the trap door to stay open, place some kibble far back in the trap and feed the cat that way ONLY until it's time to trap. Feed at same time & place leading up to trap day. On trap day, use the high value food (sardines, tuna, wet cat food).

TRAPPING SICK CATS: Please contact us first so that we can plan accordingly and raise funding for the kitty that is injured. Unfortunately sick ferals cannot come on regular TNVR days so we will need to coordinate.
